The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has set conditions for allowing the US to use its base to carry out attacks on Iran.
Starmer is being questioned for allowing the US to use British bases as President Trump threatens Iran’s civilian facilities.
The Guardian’s UK politics report says that Downing Street is not ready to clearly say the UK will stop the US from using British bases to carry out airstrikes on Iran, especially attacks on things like bridges or power plants.
When asked about a report that said Britain might not let Donald Trump use RAF bases to attack Iranian bridges or power plants, a spokesperson said Downing Street would not give constant comments on US actions, including how British bases are used.
The spokesperson said that “our position on this hasn’t changed” and explained that the current agreement allowing the US to use British bases is meant for the “collective self-defence of the region, including US defensive actions to weaken missile sites and abilities used to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz.”
But the spokesperson didn’t give details on how the government plans to make sure that UK bases are only used by the Americans for “defensive operations.”
Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, warned the Prime Minister that not taking a clear stand could lead to “British soil being used for war crimes.”
