Popular comedian and singer Carter Efe has opened up on why he stepped away from music, describing the entertainment industry as “very devilish” in a viral video that has stirred widespread reactions online.
The entertainer, who gained attention with his hit single “Machala,” said he initially believed making music was simply about releasing songs and enjoying the fame that came with them, only to later discover the complicated realities of the business side of the industry.
“I ran away from music because the industry is very devilish. I thought once you drop a song, you can just go outside and dance to it,” Carter Efe said while reflecting on his experience in the music scene.

He further claimed that his perspective changed after learning about how revenue and royalties are shared in music distribution deals. According to him, he received communication suggesting he would earn less than expected from his songs.
“Next thing, Spotify sent me a full letter saying I wouldn’t even be getting 10% from my song,” he alleged in the video, though he did not provide specific details about the agreement or parties involved in the arrangement.
His comments quickly sparked debates across social media, with many Nigerians questioning the accuracy of his claims and clarifying that Spotify typically pays rights holders and distributors rather than directly determining artists’ contract percentages. Others, however, sympathised with his frustration and pointed to the challenges many upcoming artists face in navigating the music business.
