Wike admits oversight failure as Abuja’s persistent cattle menace draws apology

1 week ago 9

The persistent and hazardous presence of cattle on the major highways and neighborhood streets of Abuja has prompted an official apology from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who explicitly accepted personal accountability for the unresolved issue.

Addressing journalists during his monthly media brief in Abuja, the minister acknowledged public frustration regarding the livestock roaming the capital city. Despite his administration’s highly publicized push to modernize and clean up the federal capital, Wike conceded that this specific problem continues to slip through the cracks, though he reassured the public that corrective measures are underway.

“I apologise that up till now there are cows still roaming the streets of Abuja, I take responsibility,” the minister said.

Beyond the livestock controversy, Wike shifted focus toward the FCT’s aggressive infrastructural expansion. He emphasized that the current development blueprint deliberately looks past the traditional upscale city centers, aiming instead to uplift long-neglected satellite towns and rural communities embedded within the surrounding area councils.

According to the minister, this comprehensive development model spans multiple critical sectors, including a massive overhaul of the road network, expanded potable water supply systems, and the construction of dedicated housing units for public officials.

“Our attention is not only on developing the city centres of Abuja. We are also working in all the Area Councils,” he highlighted. “We are providing infrastructure everywhere across the FCT.”

Looking ahead, the minister revealed that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is planning a massive, month-long showcase of finished infrastructure. This rollout will be conducted in tandem with President Bola Tinubu to commemorate the administration’s third anniversary.

The minister stated, “To celebrate Mr President’s three years in office, the FCTA will commission projects for the next 31 days commencing June 8, 2026.”

Wike robustly defended the administration’s spending, maintaining that the newly laid roads have done more than just ease traffic; they have actively choked off criminal elements by strengthening security and improving emergency access to previously isolated communities.

While the sight of cattle disrupting traffic on metropolitan freeways remains a deeply rooted, multi-year headache for local motorists and safety advocates, Wike firmly insisted that the broader, transformative impact of President Bola Tinubu’s urban and economic policies is now undeniable to anyone living in the capital.
