World Cup 2026: Algeria becomes fifth African country to win match

Algeria on Tuesday became the fifth African country to win a match at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.

The Desert Warriors came from a goal down to beat Jordan 2-1 in their second Group J fixture at the World Cup.

Goals from Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri gave the North Africans all three points against Jordan at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, Santa Clara.

Before the Jordan game, Algeria lost 3-0 against Argentina in their World Cup opener a few days ago.

DAILY POST reports that the other African countries to record a win at the ongoing World Cup so far are Egypt, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Morocco.

Ivory Coast was the first African country to win a World Cup match after beating Ecuador 1-0 in their first game.

Ghana became the second nation in Africa to win a match at the World Cup after beating Panama 1-0.

Morocco became the third team in Africa to win a match after beating  Scotland 1-0 in their second Group C match.

Egypt became the fourth team in Africa to win a match after beating New Zealand 3-1 yesterday.

Meanwhile, the likes of Senegal, Cape Verde, DR Congo, South Africa and Tunisia are yet to win a match.
