WORLD CUP: South Africa captain, Williams, begs Africans to support his team

9 hours ago 2

Ronwen Williams the starting goalkeeper and captain of the South Africa national football team, Bafana Bafana, has begged other African nations to put their set aside their grudges and support his country at the ongoing FIFA World Cup competition.

Williams made the appeal in light of how other African countries had supported South African opponent at the competition in their first match, due to xenophobic attacks against other African nationals living in South Africa.

Making the appeal in a video, Williams said “I’ve been a target over the last few days about things that I haven’t said. I didn’t speak anything about Africa and people supporting Mexico.

“I can remember, I’ve always said that, as Africa, we are one, we support each other. I don’t know where it stemmed from, and it does hurt. I’ve mentioned, I’ve been attacked, obviously, my country as well, for things that are going on back home.

“Let’s just enjoy, let’s have a wonderful time, and we leave politics to the politicians, you know, let us just play football, enjoy ourselves and criticise for what happens on the field.”
