A major political shift has occurred in Zamfara State as the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki, along with 12 lawmakers, formally announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement was made during plenary in Gusau on Monday, where the Speaker presented letters of resignation on behalf of the affected lawmakers, marking a significant realignment within the state legislature.
The development comes shortly after the defection of Governor Dauda Lawal from the PDP to the APC, a move that appears to have triggered a wave of political realignment across the state. Plans are underway for the governor and the lawmakers to be formally received into the APC at a ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, with Vice President Kashim Shettima and other top party leaders expected to attend.
Among those who joined the Speaker in defecting are key principal officers of the House, including Deputy Speaker Adamu Aliyu (Gummi II Constituency), Majority Leader Bello Mazawaje (Tsafe East Constituency), and Chief Whip Rilwanu Nagambo (Anka Constituency), among others.
Explaining the decision, Moriki said the lawmakers acted collectively in support of the governor’s new political direction. “It became necessary for all of us to support Governor Dauda Lawal to bring more development to the state.

“We received full support from our constituencies before taking the decision to leave the PDP for the APC.
“Our decision is aimed at encouraging smooth collaboration between the state and the federal governments,” he said.
With the latest defections, the APC now has full control of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, with all 24 members aligning with the ruling party, further consolidating its political dominance in the state.
