The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has officially declared that he would be contesting to take over the job of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Makinde stated on Thursday that he would be doing this under the banner of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

The governor made this known at a rally held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the state capital, finally putting an end to the battle for who controls the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, Excellency, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

Makinde had earlier led the Taminu Turaki faction of the PDP in Oyo State to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the APM as part of a strategic alliance for the forthcoming elections.

Under the agreement, candidates of the PDP faction contesting for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly seats are expected to run on the platform of the APM rather than the PDP in the 2027 elections.

Earlier, supporters, party loyalists and political stakeholders had thronged the venue as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) staged a high-profile Unity Mega Rally ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The rally came shortly after both parties formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), an agreement supervised by Governor Makinde, and the National Chairman of the APM, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle.

The signing ceremony took place earlier at the PDP South-West Secretariat, Soji Adagunodo House, along Old Ife Road, Ibadan, marking what observers described as a strategic political partnership aimed at boosting the strength of both parties ahead of future elections.
