Abia Govt to enforce mandatory use of waste bins in commercial vehicles

Abia State Government has directed that owners of all commercial vehicles operating in the State must display waste bins as enforcement of the policy will start from April 1, 2026.

According to the Abia State Government, the enforcement, which will be flagged off on April 1, 2026 is to promote proper waste disposal among commuters and for a strengthened sanitation framework.

Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Monday, at Government House, Umuahia, after this week’s State Executive Council meeting Presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

He noted that the Abia State government was sustaining good hygiene standards among the citizens, through the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA.

Kanu said that Abia State, which was regarded as one of the dirtiest states in the country in the past, has left the embarrassing status to become one of the cleanest.

The Commissioner confirmed that hotels, water factories and other establishments sealed up across the State because of environmental offenses some weeks ago, have been reopened after they complied with stipulated standards.

The Commissioner further said that the State government had successfully reclaimed gully erosion sites and other flood-prone areas of Amaiyi Amaogudu, Iyalu-Iberenta and Elugwu-Nkata areas of the State.
