He also acknowledges the crucial role of media platforms in helping artists gain visibility. With Expensive G and his growing influence, Ajesings is proving he’s a rising force in Afrobeats.

A Conversation with Ajesings: Rising Afrobeats, His Journey & The Future

Your song 'Expensive G' made the cut for Rising Afrobeats! What do you think sets your sound apart from the thousands of submissions?

Expensive G is a song with a street vibe and soulful melody that resonates with all types of listeners.

Every artiste has a moment where they realize, ‘This is it. I was made for this.’ When did that moment happen for you?

It was around 2021 when I released my first body of work, Timeless. The response from my listeners was huge, and it actually gained a lot of streams. That’s when I realized I was made for this.

If your sound was a fusion dish, what ingredients (genres, influences, vibes) would it be made of?

My sound is the infusion of Afrobeat, soul, and pop—I call it Afro Soul.

The journey of an upcoming artiste is never easy. What’s been your most defining struggle, and how did you overcome it?

As an upcoming artiste, it was never easy at the start. Things changed when I became a sound engineer—I started getting gigs for mixing and mastering services, and that’s how I was able to push my music in my own little way.

Afrobeats is evolving fast. Where do you see yourself fitting into the movement in the next five years?

I see myself taking Afrobeats to the next level.

If you had to introduce yourself to the world with just one song from your catalogue, which would it be and why?

That would be Try featuring Seyi Vibez. That song tells my story and my pain, so it’s very special to me.

What’s one misconception people have about being an underground artiste that you want to set straight?

One misconception I really want to change is that not all upcoming artistes are disloyal to the game.

Imagine you had unlimited resources for your next project—no budget limits, no restrictions. What would your dream music video look like?

I would love my music video to look like a Hollywood movie—something people can truly resonate with.

They say every artiste has their ‘holy grail’ collaboration. Which artiste—alive or dead—would be yours, and what kind of song would you create together?

I would love to work with Olamide and make timeless music.

NotJustOk has given you this platform, but what’s the one thing you wish media platforms did more of for rising artistes?

Media platforms have helped a lot of upcoming artistes blow up. Without them, many artistes might not get the recognition they deserve. I think the media is very important in the entertainment industry.
