Bauchi court jails vandal for damaging JED transformer

A Bauchi State Upper Sharia Court sitting in Toro, has sentenced a man, Julabib Muhammead, to two years in prison for vandalising a power transformer belonging to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company, JED Plc.

The convict was found guilty of destroying critical electricity infrastructure, a growing concern in the state and across the JED franchise.

Reacting to the judgment, the company’s Acting Head of Corporate Communications and Brand Management, Saratu Dauda Aliyu, described the ruling as “an answered prayer” and a bold step towards tackling the rampant cases of vandalism.

She noted that the company has suffered huge losses as funds meant for network upgrades and expansion are being diverted to repair damaged installations.

Aliyu said, “The company’s productivity is severely hampered when funds that should be directed toward network expansion and strategic upgrades are frequently diverted to rehabilitate vandalised infrastructure.”

She commended the Toro community for its vigilance, adding that it was instrumental in thwarting another vandalism attempt in which some items were recovered.

“As partners in progress, we urge all our host communities to join our ongoing efforts by also taking ownership and safeguarding the installations around them,” she said.

Aliyu stressed that JED Plc would continue to collaborate with security agencies and communities to bring vandals to justice, adding that anyone caught would be prosecuted and punished according to the law.

She reiterated the company’s commitment to protecting its assets and ensuring a steady and reliable power supply across its franchise states.
