A Benue State University, Don and community leader, Prof.Vearumun Tarhule has appealed for the cessation of escalating hostilities between Ugambe of Konshisha and Mbaiase of Gwer East Local Government Areas of the state .

Hostilities in both communities have since resulted in the tragic loss of precious lives, extensive destruction of farmlands, livelihoods, and valuable properties, leaving deep scars that will take a long time to heal.

He stated this on Monday, in a statement distributed to journalists in Makurdi.

Prof. Tarhule strongly condemned the unwarranted waste of human lives and the devastating impact of the conflict on innocent civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, who are often the most vulnerable in such situations.

He said the loss of life, displacement of people, and destruction of property have not only caused immense suffering but also undermined the progress and development of the affected communities.

“lt is imperative that the state and non-state actors take immediate and decisive action to de-escalate the conflict and work towards a peaceful resolution that addresses the root causes of the violence.

Prof Tarhule passionately appealed to the two local government authorities, traditional, and community leaders to immediately hold an all-stakeholders security and peace meeting.

“This meeting should be a platform for open and honest dialogue, where all parties can share their concerns, fears, and aspirations, and work together to build trust and understanding”, he said.

He advocated for a political and genuine dialogue, understanding, and peaceful coexistence between the two communities.

Prof Tarhule emphasized that the path to lasting peace requires commitment, empathy, and a willingness to listen to and understand each other’s perspectives.

“It is only through collective effort and commitment to peace that we can prevent further loss of life and property and build a brighter future for our children and generations to come.”

He urged the Benue State government and security agencies to prioritize peace and work towards a swift restoration of law and order to pave the way for restatement and resumption of farming activities, which are crucial for the livelihoods of the people in the affected communities.

Prof Tarhule expressed hope that through collective effort and commitment to peace, the people of Ugambe and Mbaiase can overcome their differences and build a future characterized by peace, prosperity and development.
