Codify Nigeria First Policy into law for enforcement – CPPE tells FG

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise has urged the federal government to codify its Nigeria First Policy into law for efficient implementation.

The Chief Executive Officer of CPPE, Muda Yusuf, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

This comes as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the implementation of the Nigeria First Policy with the core objective to prioritise Nigerian services, human capital, and enterprises in both public and private procurement and investment decisions.

Reacting, CPPE said the policy, if enforced, would address Nigeria’s reliance on importation and boost domestic production capacity.

However, the Centre urged that the Nigeria First Policy impact should not be limited by weak enforcement mechanisms, poor institutional coordination, lack of legislative backing, and policy inconsistency.

As a solution, CPPE said the FG should “codify the Nigeria First Policy into law to ensure enforceability, consistency, and long-term sustainability.”

“Integrate domestic preference clauses into all public procurement and investment promotion frameworks.

“Introduce targeted fiscal incentives to stimulate domestic production and strengthen local supply chains.

“Build strong institutional and enforcement capacity to ensure compliance, minimise leakages, and sustain momentum.

“Foster strong public–private collaboration to drive innovation, ensure supply readiness, and deepen economic inclusion.

“Establish sector-specific benchmarks and measurable performance indicators to monitor impact and adjust strategies.

“The Nigeria First Policy represents a strategic inflection point in Nigeria’s economic development journey. By deliberately prioritising domestic production, value addition, and local participation.
