Delta: Court remands 25-year-old man for allegedly raping teenage girl

The Delta State High Court 3 sitting in Warri has remanded a 25-year-old man, Oghenevwede Friday, in prison custody for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl (name withheld), the daughter of a blind woman.

The court also adjourned the matter to February 4, 2025, pending the advice of the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The incident reportedly occurred on January 5, 2025, at Iyara Street in Warri. It was gathered that the blind woman had sent her daughter on an errand at about 9 p.m. On her way home, the suspect, Friday, called out to her, but she refused to respond.

The suspect allegedly followed her to a dark path, forcefully dragged her into a tricycle (keke), and raped her. He then took her to his house, where he washed the bloodstains off her clothes and gave her his shirt to wear. The girl managed to escape when he asked her to fetch water from a well.

With the intervention of the Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Human Rights, Comrade Kelvin Ejumudo, the suspect was apprehended by local youths and handed over to the Police “B” Division after the incident became public knowledge.

Medical tests conducted on the victim confirmed that her hymen had been broken and her vulva ruptured.

The suspect was arraigned in court yesterday by the police and remanded in prison custody, pending the DPP’s advice. The matter has been adjourned to February 4.

In a statement on his Facebook page, the Senior Special Assistant on Human Rights, Comrade Kelvin Ejumudo, condemned the suspect’s actions.

He stated, “Rape is a criminal act, and His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration frowns at it and has zero tolerance for rapists.”
