The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed six separate charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja against nine individuals accused of terrorism-related offences, including those linked to the deadly attacks on Yelwata village in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The Yelwata assault, which occurred in mid-June, claimed several lives and left many others injured. Two suspects identified as Haruna Adamu and Muhammad Abdullahi, both from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, have been charged in absentia on a four-count indictment specifically tied to the massacre. The offences, according to court documents, contravene Section 12 of the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2022.

The DSS alleges that Adamu and Abdullahi withheld critical intelligence on planned terrorist operations and killings in Abinsi and Yelwata between June 13 and 14. They are also accused of conspiring with other suspects, including Musa Beniyon, Bako Malowa, Ibrahim Tunga, Asara Ahnadu, Legu Musa, Adamu Yale, Boddi Ayuba, and Pyeure Damina, many of whom remain at large.

In a related case, Terkende Ashuwa and Amos Alede, both residents of Guma LGA, face three counts of carrying out reprisal attacks in connection with the Abinsi and Yelwata incidents.

The DSS also brought a four-count charge against Halima Haliru Umar, a 32-year-old from Faskari LGA, Katsina State, for allegedly concealing information about a suspected gun runner, identified as Alhaji Sani, believed to be engaged in arms trafficking, banditry, and kidnapping.

Additionally, Silas Iduh Oloche, from Agatu LGA, Benue State, is facing a six-count charge over the unlawful possession of 18 firearms and grenades without a licence, in violation of Section 27 of the Firearms Act. Other individuals arrested for illegal possession of weapons have also been charged by the Federal Government.

The charges were filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Muhammad Abubakar. The court has not yet fixed a date for the commencement of trial.
