The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) has announced that approximately 4,145 security personnel will be deployed for the council polls scheduled for September 21.

These elections aim to fill 17 chairmanship and 260 ward councilorship positions across the state.

ENSIEC Chairman Prof. Christian Ngwu spoke to reporters on Wednesday, stating that at least one security officer will be present at each of the 4,145 polling units in the 17 local government areas.

“We are in close synergy with the lead agency in policing, which is the Nigeria Police, to get the required numbers and get the posting finalized,” he said.

Ngwu assured that the deployed security personnel would be fully armed and tasked with ensuring a smooth voting process. “They will ensure that no one causes obstruction to the voting exercise on Saturday,” he added.

He confirmed that the commission has secured all non-sensitive materials for the elections and will receive the sensitive materials shortly before the polls.

“ENSIEC is fully prepared for free, fair and credible council polls on Saturday. We want all eligible voters to come out en masse to elect their preferred candidates without fear or favor on the D-day,” he stated.

Around two million voters are expected to participate, and ENSIEC has recruited 12,800 ad hoc electoral staff to facilitate the election process.
