Liverpool icon, Steve Nicol has criticized Chelsea players for delivering a performance devoid of intent during their recent 3-0 defeat in the Premier League against Everton.
Earlier on Saturday, the Blues suffered their fourth consecutive loss across all competitions at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Everton striker, Beto netted two goals in the 33rd and 62nd minutes, followed by Iliman Ndiaye scoring the standout goal in the 76th minute of the league encounter.
Following the match, Nicol asserted that the Chelsea players appeared disinterested in securing even a single point against a determined Everton team.
He said on ESPN FC, “One must question the commitment displayed today. At no point did they seem engaged.
“There was nothing to take pride in. Occasionally, one can leave a venue, especially when playing away, thinking, ‘We were unfortunate, or the goalkeeper made an error.'”
Nicol, who was instrumental in Liverpool’s four league title victories between 1981 and 1994, further commented:
“However, assessing this performance, every aspect was dreadful, terrible. The most significant issue for me is that my team exhibited no ambition.
“They played from the first minute to nearly the 90th, merely accepting the situation. Everton appeared eager, while Chelsea lacked the necessary determination.”
In the recent defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium, Chelsea enjoyed 64% possession and completed 617 passes with an accuracy of 89%.
They managed four shots on target, whereas Everton had nine shots on target in comparison.
Chelsea squandered both of their significant opportunities against the team managed by David Moyes earlier on Saturday.
Liam Rosenior’s team is currently just two points ahead of Everton in the 2025-26 Premier League standings, with the reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions positioned in sixth place.
They have accumulated 48 points from 31 league matches thus far.
