EPL: Man Utd’s Amad Diallo breaks African player’s record, surpasses Ighalo, others

Manchester United star, Amad Diallo has made history following his hat-trick for the club in their Premier League 3-1 win against Southampton at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

Man United’s official website confirmed that the Ivorian is the first African player to score a hat-trick for the club and the only Red Devils player to score one in the Premier League at a younger age is club legend Wayne Rooney.

Diallo’s record-breaking performance for the most goals in a single game for Man United made him the first African player to do so, with only Odion Ighalo and Quinton Fortune previously managing to score multiple goals (2) in a match.

The 22-year-old is also the third Man United player to score a treble from the 80th minute onwards, following in the footsteps of former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Recall that Fortune scored a brace against South Melbourne in the 2000 Club World Championship on January 11, 2000.

The South African later netted twice in a 6-0 home win over Bradford City in September, 2000.

Ighalo, on his part, scored a brace in a 3-0 win against Derby County in an FA Cup fifth round clash in March 2020.

The Nigerian joined Man United on a five-month loan deal on deadline day in 2020.

His loan was extended before leaving Old Trafford for Saudi Arabian club Al Shabab in 2021.
