The Federal Government has addressed growing concerns over a viral video in which a respected religious leader urged Nigerians to disregard medical advice on salt consumption.

DAILY POST reports that Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy recently urged Nigerians to ignore medical advice concerning salt consumption.

The Nigerian government dismissed the clergyman’s admonition in a statement by the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations of the Ministry of Health, Alaba Balogun.

The government warned against misinformation that endangers public health and acknowledged the significant influence of religious leaders in society, stressing that excessive salt intake poses serious health risks.

“Sodium is an essential mineral for the human body, supporting nerve function, muscle movement, and fluid balance.

“However, consuming it in excess increases the risk of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease,” the statement read.

The statement also emphasized that science and faith need not be at odds, urging Nigerians to consult licensed healthcare providers for accurate medical information.

The government stressed that it is committed to evidence-based policy and respectful engagement with all sectors of society, including religious communities, in advancing the nation’s health goals.
