Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to eradicating insecurity in Benue State before the end of his tenure.
He made this declaration during a visit to Otukpo, the heart of the Idoma Kingdom, where he sympathised with residents over the recent spate of killings and kidnappings in the area.
Otukpo town has, in recent times, grappled with civil unrest following the assassination of a prominent indigene and the abduction of several others.
Addressing these concerns at the palace of the Ochi’Idoma, Governor Alia reassured the people of the Benue South Senatorial District of his steadfast commitment to their safety and well-being.
He called for an immediate cessation of violence and affirmed that his government is resolute in its determination to overcome insecurity before the expiration of his term.
Governor Alia also emphasised that security is a collective responsibility. He acknowledged the support of the Federal Government and highlighted the recent visit of a team of security experts—Benue indigenes—tasked with assessing the situation on the ground and reporting to the relevant authorities as part of broader efforts to restore peace.
In response, the Ochi’Idoma, His Royal Majesty, Chief John Elaigwu, commended Governor Alia’s dedication to enhancing security and improving infrastructure across the state.
He pledged the full support of his people for the administration’s efforts and urged the governor to intensify the fight against insecurity while implementing further developmental projects across Idomaland.
Chief Elaigwu also advocated for greater representation of the Idoma people in the state’s governance and decision-making processes.
Similarly, the chairman of Otukpo Local Government, Maxcell Ogiri, lauded Governor Alia as a true leader who stands with his people in moments of crisis.
He echoed the Ochi’Idoma’s pledge of support, affirming the local government’s commitment to partnering with the governor in safeguarding lives and property.
Governor Alia later visited Asa 2 in Otukpo town to commiserate with the family of Chief Akatu Onche, a retired immigration officer recently murdered in his home by unidentified gunmen.
The assailants also abducted members of his family, further heightening tensions and concerns within the community.
