
Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has rewarded all the players and management team of Abakaliki Football Club with N40 million despite their defeat to Kwara United in the just-concluded President Federation Cup at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena Stadium, Lagos State.
The governor made the announcement when he received the team at his office in the new Government House, Ochudo Centenary City, Abakaliki.
Nwifuru praised the team for their impressive performance and encouraged the players to remain focused despite challenges and setbacks.
He commended the efforts of the coaching crew and advised them to ensure that all players are given equal opportunities to play and showcase their talent.
The governor also promised to return the team to the Nigerian National League, NNL, in the next season. He further revealed that players’ salaries would be sustained until October and reviewed by November 2025.
A representative of the team, Mr Cyril Timothy, expressed gratitude to the Governor for his goodwill and fatherly support towards the club, assuring that the team would live up to expectations.
The head coach, Ifeanyi Onyedika, described the governor’s reward as overwhelming, adding that the upcoming season would be open to players capable of fulfilling the governor’s and fans’ aspirations.
“Our assurance to fans of Abakaliki FC is that we are going to do better than what we did in the just concluded season,” Onyedika added.
In recognition of their efforts, each of the thirty-six players is to receive one million naira as a token of appreciation for their remarkable performance, while non-technical staff will be rewarded with N500, 000, among other benefits.
The governor’s gesture is seen as a major boost to the team’s morale and a clear demonstration of his commitment to promoting sports development in Ebonyi State.
