The Chairman of Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area in Kebbi State, Hussaini Aliyu Bena, has confirmed that suspected members of the notorious Lakurawa bandit group attacked a church in his council area on Sunday, abducting eight female worshippers during service.
Speaking to journalists via telephone, Bena said the attackers stormed Zagani village, located a few kilometres from the Zamfara State border, while a church service was ongoing, and forcibly took the women away.
“We’ve not been able to obtain the victims’ identities due to poor network coverage in the area. So far, no contact has been established with the abductors,” he said.
The council chairman raised concerns over what he described as a worrisome trend, alleging that the bandits, who may have reached a peace agreement with the Zamfara State government, are now shifting their operations into Kebbi, which they consider a soft target.
Bena disclosed that the Kebbi State government had made efforts last year to deploy military personnel to the area, but the rainy season disrupted the plan.
He added that arrangements have now been finalized for a large-scale deployment aimed at securing the border communities from further attacks.
