HURIWA slams Tinubu over ‘no free beer parlour’ response to hardship in Nigeria

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has berated President Bola Tinubu over his recent comments on the high cost of living in Nigeria.

The president had on Friday Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain patient despite the high cost of living, stating that the country can no longer expect “a free bowl” without addressing its economic challenges.

Tinubu, who made the remarks when former members of the National Assembly visited him at the State House, Abuja, acknowledged the hunger in the country but emphasized that there is no “free beer parlour.”

He used the metaphor to highlight that real development requires time and effort.

The president said: “We must work hard. We have sustained 25 years of democracy this year and we don’t want to keep the people hungry and angry. But we say be patient.

“There is no free beer parlour anymore. We will retool and rebuild our nation through your cooperation.

However, HURIWA in a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the president’s words were hollow as his administration continues to indulge in extravagant spending while preaching austerity to the masses.

The group pointed out the glaring disparity between the government’s words and actions, highlighting the billions spent on feeding, entertainment, and expenditures for the First Lady’s foreign trips.

The statement read: “It is unacceptable for the government to preach sacrifice and austerity while squandering billions on unnecessary expenses.

“The President must take concrete actions to address the high cost of living, rather than simply paying lip service.”

HURIWA urged the Federal Government to adopt cost-cutting measures, citing the need for fiscal responsibility and accountability.

HURIWA’s key demands:

– Immediate reduction in government expenditure on non-essential items

– Increased transparency and accountability in federal spending

– Concrete actions to address food insecurity and high cost of living
