There have reportedly been discussions about dividing up the production of Alphabet’s Waymo, the company that makes autonomous vehicles, and Hyundai Motor of South Korea.

Waymo’s sixth-generation autonomous technology might be built upon Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 electric cars, according to a Reuters report initially attributed to South Korea’s Electronic Times.

The potential partnership, according to reports, aims to start a new chapter in the growth of the auto industry by fusing Waymo’s autonomous driving technology with Hyundai’s production expertise.

The two businesses had already met numerous times to talk about this possible application, with Hyundai Motor—which is renowned for its wide range of vehicle options and global presence—standing to gain a great deal from a partnership of this kind.

The South Korean publication Electronic Times stated, citing sources, that Waymo representatives have met with Hyundai Motor representatives more than three times at the former’s headquarters in the United States. Hyundai cars are allegedly being sought after by the robotaxi startup to serve as robotaxis.

Combining Waymo’s technological expertise with Hyundai’s own might greatly increase Hyundai’s competitiveness in the tech-focused car industry and accelerate the development of autonomous vehicles.
