Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has unveiled a comprehensive set of reforms targeting the revitalisation of the civil service, pension management, and continuous professional development for workers.
The announcement was made during his address at the May Day celebration at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Thursday.
In his speech, Governor Yusuf emphasized that May Day is more than just a public holiday.
He described it as a day deeply rooted in sacrifice and the ongoing fight for justice, equity, and the dignity of labour.
“Today is not merely a public holiday; it is a day rooted in sacrifice and the pursuit of justice, equity, and the dignity of labour,” he remarked.
He also paid tribute to Kano’s historical role, recalling that the state was the first to host an official May Day event in 1980 under the late Governor Abubakar Rimi.
He pledged to continue this legacy with policies aimed at improving the welfare of workers.
In a significant move, Governor Yusuf revealed that the state government has approved a new minimum wage of ₦71,000 for civil servants, making Kano one of the first states to implement such an increase.
“Through deliberate and determined efforts, we have ensured that the new minimum wage in Kano State now stands at ₦71,000. This step is critical in boosting morale, reducing economic hardship, and enhancing productivity,” he stated.
Highlighting his administration’s vision, the governor outlined several key initiatives designed to modernize the civil service. These include regular training, workshops, and partnerships with institutions like the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON).
“These efforts are part of our broader strategy to modernise administrative processes and ensure that civil servants are equipped with the skills needed to meet contemporary governance demands,” Yusuf explained.
Additionally, the governor announced that his administration is reviewing vital operational documents such as the Civil Service Rules, Financial Instructions, and the Scheme of Service to align them with best practices.
These reforms, he noted, aim to boost productivity, improve discipline, and enhance service delivery across government ministries and agencies.
Governor Yusuf also stressed the importance of pension reforms, ensuring timely and fair payments to retirees. “Pension reform is not just an administrative task; it is a moral obligation to those who have served the state with honour,” he remarked.
The governor reiterated his commitment to transparency, professionalism, and the welfare of both civil servants and pensioners, describing them as essential to the success of government operations. He called for the cooperation of all stakeholders in supporting the successful implementation of the reforms.
