Worried by the growing wave of killings and violent crimes linked to thuggery in Kano, a youth-focused organization, the Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS), has voiced deep fears about the deteriorating safety of life in the state.
YOSPIS Executive Director, Zainab Nasir Ahmad, described the current trend as a social emergency that requires immediate and holistic action from all levels of government and society.
“We are alarmed by the increasing cases of phone snatching, armed robbery, and violent attacks involving boys—some as young as 15,” Ahmad said.
“These are no longer just law enforcement matters. What we are witnessing is a breakdown of the social fabric.”
She called on the Kano State Government to declare a state of emergency on youth violence, warning that the situation is spiraling beyond control.
“This demands a wartime-level response that is both urgent and uncompromising,” Ahmad stated, her voice heavy with concern.
YOSPIS identified several root causes fueling the crisis, including drug addiction, unemployment, lack of parental involvement, peer pressure, and a steady erosion of moral and communal values. The group also pointed fingers at rising political tensions, which they say have emboldened violent youth gangs, often backed by powerful sponsors.
“No one—no matter how influential—should be above the law. If anyone is found to be supporting or financing these groups, they must be held accountable,” Ahmad added.
She issued a passionate appeal to parents to reconnect with their children, engage in open conversations about drugs and peer pressure, and offer them emotional and moral support. She also urged community and religious leaders to use their platforms to champion peace and rebuild trust within neighborhoods.
“Young people must understand that there is a future beyond violence,” she said. “We want them to know that help is available, that education, vocational skills, and community support can lead them to a better life.”
YOSPIS reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders—from government bodies to local NGOs—to offer young people alternatives to crime and help them rediscover a sense of purpose and hope.
