Lagos deploys speed monitors, sets N50,000 fine for violators

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Huawei Technologies, has launched four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to monitor speed limits and enforce traffic regulations across the state.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, explained that the new installations would enhance existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other traffic management tools to improve road safety and efficiency.

“The checkpoint sites are designed to detect overspeeding. One is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80km/h, while the other is installed at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60km/h,” Osiyemi stated.

“These checkpoint sites are strategically located to detect and deter overspeeding, which remains one of the leading causes of road accidents.”

Additionally, the government has introduced e-police sites at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road to detect various traffic violations. Osiyemi explained that these systems would monitor offenses such as running red lights, improper lane use, illegal U-turns, and reversing on highways.

To enforce compliance, the state has set fines for violations. “The fine for running a red light is N20,000, while exceeding the speed limit will attract a penalty of N50,000,” Osiyemi announced.

He further emphasized that enforcement would begin immediately, with offenders receiving SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service detailing their infractions and applicable fines.

“This system is not designed to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving behavior and reduce the rate of accidents on our roads. The goal is simple: to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment,” he said.

The press briefing was attended by the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa; representatives from Huawei Technologies; and senior ministry officials.
