Late gospel singer, Osinachi’s husband sentenced to death for her murder

Late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu's husband, Peter Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging for the culpable homicide that led to the death of the late gospel singer.

The ruling was made by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, on Monday, April 28, 2025 and Osinachi Nwachukwu's husband was sentenced to death.

Nwachukwu was found guilty of causing the death of his wife on April 8, 2022, through a pattern of abuse that resulted in her tragic death. The court concluded that the prosecution had met the burden of proof, leading to his conviction on charges including culpable homicide, spousal battery, and cruelty to children.

Nwachukwu was arraigned on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) on behalf of the Federal Government, facing a 23-count charge. Throughout the trial, 17 witnesses were called, including two of Osinachi’s children, who testified against their father. The prosecution also presented 25 exhibits in court.

In his defense, Nwachukwu testified and called four additional witnesses while presenting four exhibits. His defense lawyer, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for leniency, urging the court to show mercy in sentencing. However, the prosecution counsel, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, called for a strict penalty in accordance with the law.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging for the primary charge of culpable homicide. He also received additional prison sentences for other offenses. This is including two years each for multiple counts, and fines of N500,000 and N200,000 for specific charges. Nwachukwu was also given various terms of imprisonment for other counts, including six months for one charge and three years for another.

This ruling marks the end of a highly publicized case that has drawn attention to issues of domestic violence and justice in Nigeria. This is particularly following the untimely death of Osinachi Nwachukwu, a beloved gospel artist.
