The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), has given the Nigerian government a three-weeks ultimatum to settle the salary arrears of its workers or they would embark on an indefinite strike.
Chairman of the Yaba College of Technology chapter of ASUP, Monday Ojo, who gave the warning at a news conference in Lagos on Thursday, warned that failure by the government to resolve issues affecting the union would affect polytechnic education in Nigeria negatively.
The latest threat is coming soon after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) also threatened to go on strike if the Nigerian government does not honour previous agreements reached on welfare issues of its members.
Ojo who spoke on behalf of the union’s National President, Mr Shammah Kpanja, said the decision was taken at a recent emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.
Ojo said ASUP had expressed concern over what he described as disturbing developments threatening the stability of the polytechnic education sector.
According to him, the Nigerian government has not been able to make commitments to resolving the issues.
“This has left us with no choice but to issue this ultimatum. Our stand is for the Federal Government to address the issues satisfactorily,” Ojo said.
“Key issues raised include non-release of the circular for Peculiar Academic Allowance, unpaid arrears of the 25/35 per cent salary review, and continued discrimination against HND holders.
“Our members are demotivated by unpaid promotion arrears, with some dating back to 2019. This situation is unacceptable and worsening morale in institutions,” he stated.
Continuing, Ojo condemned the unlawful disruption of union activities by security agents, stressing that ASUP was dissatisfied with the inability of the Federal Government to establish a dedicated polytechnic commission.
“If these issues remain unresolved after 21 days, we may have no option but to declare a trade dispute and withdraw our services nationwide,” he warned.
