Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has abolished casual labour across the state’s public service, converting all temporary and casual workers into permanent and pensionable staff.

The development is part of ongoing reforms under the Idris administration aimed at improving the welfare and job security of civil servants in the state.

Governor Idris, a former teacher and veteran labour leader, announced the policy as part of his administration’s commitment to ending precarious employment conditions and ensuring dignity of labour.

“My administration has remained steadfast and consistent in the payment of salaries, pensions, gratuities, death benefits, leave grants, and other entitlements. Workers’ welfare is of paramount importance to this government.

“I will never let them down,” the governor was quoted by his Special Adviser, Media & Publicity, Yahaya Sarki, in a statement to mark this year’s Workers’ Day.

“Salaries are paid promptly, with workers consistently receiving alerts by the 23rd of every month. The same applies to retirees. Leave grants are also disbursed regularly and without delay.

“Temporary and casual staff have been absorbed into permanent and pensionable appointments, abolishing casual labour in the state workforce,” he added.

According to Sarki, since assuming office in 2023, Governor Idris has implemented a number of pro-worker initiatives.

“These include the prompt payment of salaries, usually by the 23rd of each month, regular disbursement of leave grants, and the full settlement of all outstanding pension and gratuity arrears.

“Kebbi is currently the only state in Nigeria up-to-date in the payment of pensions, gratuities, and death benefits at all levels of government.

“Kebbi became the first state to approve a N75,000 minimum wage, surpassing the federal government’s benchmark of N70,000. The decision was praised by the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero,” he stated.
