Mark Carney has won the Canadian election, securing a continuation of his term as prime minister, according to projections by Canadian broadcasters CBC and CTV News, as well as the Associated Press.  Carneys victory marks a significant political comeback for the ruling Liberal Party, fueled by a surge of nationalism in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's aggressive rhetoric and sweeping tariffs against Canadian goods. Carney, a former central banker with limited political experience, had called a snap election late last month after the Liberals saw a dramatic rise in the polls, closing a deficit of more than 20 points since the start of 2025. His victory represents a strong repudiation of Trump's threats to annex Canada as the "51st state," which sparked widespread outrage and a rallying of support for the Liberals. Although Carneys Liberal Party has been declared the winner, it remains unclear whether it will secure a majority in the 343-seat House of Commons. CTV News projected that the Liberals would likely fall short of a majority, while CBC said it was still too soon to confirm. If the Liberals are limited to a minority government, Carney will have to negotiate with other parties to maintain power, a situation that typically leads to governments lasting no more than two-and-a-half years in Canada. The campaign leading up to the election was shaken by a deadly attack at a Vancouver street fair over the weekend, which resulted in 11 deaths and temporarily suspended political campaigning. Police have ruled out terrorism, identifying the suspect as a local man with a history of mental health issues. Carney took over as prime minister earlier this year after Justin Trudeau resigned. He defeated Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, who had been favored to win before Trump's intervention triggered a reversal of political fortunes.
