NBC apologises over EFCC’s ‘incursion’ into Enugu radio station

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has apologised to the broadcast industry, people of Enugu State and listening public, over the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives’ incursion into Urban Radio 94.5FM Enugu.

The management of the radio station had on October 15 accused the EFCC operatives of storming its studio during a live programme to arrest its presenters, including one Favour Ekoh.

But in a statement issued in Abuja, the commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, alleged that Ekoh was involved in a N700 million ponzi scheme.

He said the presenter was not arrested during a live programme.

The spokesman added that the EFCC operatives went to the station with an arrest warrant and informed the Managing Director, Bamikole Owoyomi, of their mission.

The NBC tendered the apology in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Susan Obi, on Monday in Abuja.

Obi said the commission received with dismay the invasion of the radio station by EFCC operatives during a live radio show, titled: “PrimeTime.”

She said: “The incursion, which was purportedly to arrest the programme’s presenter, Favour Ekoh, is viewed as a violation of the professional ethics of Broadcasting especially on a live Broadcast.

“The approach for which the arrest was carried out is improper. This action is regrettable, considering the impact of the broadcast media on society.

“NBC differs with the manner of approach deployed by the anti-graft agency which could have led to public disorder, disturbance, aggravate mass panic and hysteria.

“While the NBC appreciates EFCC for fighting financial crimes, it hereby expresses heartfelt apologies to the listening public, the people of Enugu State, and the entire broadcast Industry for the incident.”

She urged the general public, at this point, to be law-abiding, while the law takes its course.
