Nico Williams reveals why he rejected Barcelona

It was a sad day for Barcelona supporters after Spain winger Nico Williams signed a new 10-year contract with his club Athletic Bilbao.

Athletic Bilbao confirmed the news of Nico Williams contract extension on it's official website on Friday, July 4, 2025. The 22-year-old had been linked with a move Barcelona, alongside Bundesliga Champions Bayern Munich were also speculated to be interested in his services.

Nico Williams initial contract was due to expire in 2027 but he has now extended his terms with them until 30 June, 2035.

Nico Williams' release clause, which is believed to have been €62m (£53m), has been increased to almost £100m.

Why did Nico Williams sign a new contract with Barcelona?

Nico confirmed that his decision to extend his contract to 2035 was because of his love for the club and he felt at home.

"When it comes to making decisions, for me the most important thing is to listen to your heart. I am where I want to be, with my people. This is my home”.

He has scored 31 goals in 167 appearances for the club and helped them finish fourth in La Liga last season as they qualified for the 2025-26 Champions League. He also helped Spain win Euro 2024, scoring in the 2-1 victory over England in the final.
