Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has joined the rest of the world in condemning gender-based violence.
In a statement issued on Monday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Tinubu said gender-based violence remains one of the most widespread human rights violations worldwide.
She, therefore, called for collective action to eradicate the scourge.
According to Tinubu, nearly one in three women globally experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
She said: “In Nigeria, harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation persist, often justified by cultural or religious norms. Despite progress in addressing these issues, many women and girls, especially in rural and underserved areas, remain trapped in cycles of violence and inequality.

The First Lady stressed the importance of collective action across all sectors of society to combat gender-based violence.
She called for reporting and timely prosecution of perpetrators, increased support for victims and survivors, and creating safer environments for women and girls.
“We must take collective action across all sectors of society. Reporting and timely prosecution of perpetrators, increased support for victims and survivors, and creating safer environments for women and girls are vital to creating safer environments for women and girls,” she stated.
As the world observes the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, Tinubu urged individuals to challenge harmful behaviours and work together to ensure a safer society where everyone, regardless of gender, can live without fear of violence.
“For me, formal education for the girl child remains the key to liberating them and helping them make informed choices.
“Let us work together to ensure a safer society where everyone, regardless of gender, can live without fear of violence,” she counseled.
