
One person sustained injuries on Sunday, following a violent altercation between tricycle operators, Keke riders, and a group of irate youths at the bustling Evans Square in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Police Command has since arrested three individuals in connection with the incident, which had the potential to escalate into a broader communal crisis.
Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday.
“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that on 17 May 2025, at about 12:30 p.m., officers of the Adekunle Division received a distress call reporting a clash between some commercial tricycle (keke) riders and some youths at Evans Square, Ebute Metta.
“Consequently, Police Patrol Teams, Tactical Squads, and other police detachments and operatives responded swiftly to the distress call and were able to promptly restore normalcy.”
He confirmed that “One individual who sustained injuries during the chaos was rescued and immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment and is recovering well.”
The Lagos police spokesperson continued, “The Lagos State Command hereby confirms that no life was lost in the incident.”
He also revealed “However, that three of the suspects involved in the disturbance of public peace leading to the unrest were arrested at the scene, detained in police custody, and will be arraigned in court upon completion of the investigation.”
Jimoh has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, to take over the investigation into the recent clash, and ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice.
He also emphasized the Command’s commitment to public safety, that law and order will continue to be enforced across the state without compromise.
The Command clarified that the incident was not linked to any ethnic dispute or communal tensions in the state.
“There is no indication of ethnic conflict or tension in any part of the state. The incident posed no threat to the overall peace and security of Lagos,” the statement read.
The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its constitutional mandate to protect lives and property and assured residents of its readiness to maintain stability and public order at all times.
Parents and guardians were advised to caution their children and wards against participating in activities that could disturb public peace.
The Command also urged members of the public to continue with their daily activities without fear of intimidation or harassment.
