Former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba has shed light on the widespread phenomenon of outgoing presidents and governors withholding support from their deputies seeking succession.

Addressing the 3rd Annual Conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday, Osoba cited distrust and suspicion as primary factors driving this trend globally, including Nigeria.

The conference, themed “Strategic Solutions for Good Governance, Food Security, and Sustainable Growth in Nigeria,” provided a platform for Osoba to share his insights, drawn from years of experience in Nigerian politics

Osoba emphasized that this issue transcends Africa, pointing to the complex relationship between former US President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore. “Al Gore contested the presidency but didn’t receive Clinton’s full backing, as Clinton feared being a liability to Gore’s campaign,” Osoba noted.

While acknowledging the rarity of deputies succeeding their bosses, Osoba remains optimistic about opportunities for growth in Nigeria. “The array of young, passionate leaders at this conference inspires confidence that one will emerge as Nigeria’s president,” he said.

Osoba expressed concerns over governors orchestrating the impeachment of their deputies. When asked about potential constitutional amendments to safeguard deputies, Osoba was skeptical. “Little can be done; if the State House of Assembly favors the governor, they can attempt anything, including impeachment.”

Osoba stressed that fostering better leader-deputy relationships is key, rather than relying on legal measures. “It’s not about law, but relationship. Leader cooperation is crucial,” he emphasized.
