PDP convention: ‘You can’t compare Makinde with Asiwaju’ – Fayose defends backing Tinubu

Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said there is no basis to compare Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and President Bola Tinubu.

Fayose made the remark while insisting that backing President Bola Tinubu does not amount to anti-party activity despite his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He emphasized that national interest above party loyalty, noting that political differences are a normal feature of democracy.

He spoke to Channels Television during Sunday’s PDP’s national convention held in Abuja.

“Nigeria is for all of us, you are first an Ekiti man before you become a political party card bearer. All the former governors are behind the current governor,” he said.

He also cited examples from international politics to support his position.

“Obama is not supporting the Democrats, the former president is not supporting Trump, have they expelled them? No, democracy will have those differences on national issues,” he stated.

Fayose further argued that support should be based on competence rather than party affiliation.

“We must not say because it’s our party member that must win when we know our party member has no capacity. Would you compare a Makinde with an Asiwaju?” he added.

Lately, the PDP had broken into factions with Makinde and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State on one part and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike leading the other.

The Mohammed and Makinde’s faction had held its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State but the event was nullified by the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja.
