Plateau govt knocks military for not arresting killers despite close proximity

The Plateau State government has blamed the Nigerian Army over its failure to arrest any of the gunmen that invaded the Jebbu Binde village of Ta-Hoss District in Riyom Local Government Area on Monday, where over 30 people were killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

The state Commissioner for Information, Hon. Joyce Ramnap, who expressed the government’s disappointment on a Channels Television ‘The Morning Brief’
programme, on Friday, said it was appalling that despite a military checkpoint only 200 meters away from the village, the soldiers could not arrest nor eliminate any of the attackers, adding that their failure has raised questions on their commitment to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians.

She said the government was exasperated that the community that was attacked by the militia marauders is close to an access road which has military checkpoints.

“It is not a hidden community that we would say it is far, and that is why the people were not able to access help,” the Commissioner said.

“However, there is room to do more investigation, and the governor specifically requested that at least they should have some form of arrest. The checkpoint is barely 200 metres from where this incident happened.

“The response we got was that none were arrested and none were captured. None of those killed were affected by all that happened.

“If you are that close and you engaged them closely like that, you should be able to say this is where they followed and the measures to arrest them, but so far, no arrest has been made.

“We do not want to stereotype and say that the entire Army compromised in this case. However, there is room to do more investigation, and the governor specifically requested that at least they should have some form of arrest,” the commissioner added.

Ramnap who described the fresh killings of the people as unprovoked and despicable, lamented that apart from the killing the people, the assailants also go into the farmlands to destroy crops.
