Yobe State Police Command said its operatives have busted a gang of criminals specialised in burglary and theft in the state.

Dungus Abdulkarim, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, indicating that the operation followed the resurgence of burglary, theft, and phone snatching within the state’s major towns.

“During the period under review, reports were received of shops being burgled, with items worth millions of naira carted away, as well as incidents of motorcycle theft.

“Four residential houses were also broken into, with motorcycles stolen in Damaturu.

“Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the ‘A’ Division Police Headquarters carried out a tactical manhunt and successfully apprehended the suspects”, the Command said.

It added that, those arrested Abubakar Ahmad (20years) of Hausari; Babagana Goni (25years) of Nayi Nawa; Abubakar Ibrahim (28years) of Alhajiri and Mohammed Adamu (28years) of Nassarawa; specialising in housebreaking, shop burglary, and theft, operating as a gang within Damaturu metropolis, mostly at night.

“Also arrested were: Babangida Yahaya, alias “Kala” (28years) of Abbari and Ayuba Mohammed (27years) of Rimi Uku, Potiskum

“Both are notorious receivers of stolen items, including motorcycles, which they dispose of illegally”, it added.

According to the Police Command, one Mohammed Mohammed (40years) and Adam Abubakar (17years) of Nayi Nawa were identified as accessories before and after the criminal acts.

“Another suspect, Hassan (surname withheld), believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate, is currently at large but will soon be apprehended”, the Command said.

Items recovered include: 3 scooter motorcycles; 34 pieces of ankara fabric; assorted clothing and two bed sheets; a female hijab; 1 bag of 100kg rice and an Itel smartphone among other valuable items.

The Command noted that all the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for discreet investigation and subsequent prosecution.
