The Akwa Ibom State Police Command said it has launched investigation into the fire outbreak which gutted a fuel station (Fonex) in Itam along Uyo/Ikot Ekpene road, early hours of Saturday.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, who confirmed the incident, said there was no casualty recorded.

She said, “We received information about a fire outbreak in Itam, and officers were immediately dispatched. There was no casualty and investigation is still ongoing.”

It was gathered that the facility caught fire when a truck loaded with petrol, which was discharging fuel, went up in flames.

A thick smoke from the fire soon attracted large crowd of people who watched helplessly while Fire Service personnel battled to put off the fire.

Motorists who spoke with journalists expressed concern about the incident, praying that it should not lead to loss of life.

“What we are afraid of is it resulting to loss of life. The property and resources lost might be regained but we don’t want any human life to be affected,” one motorist said.
