The Lagos State Police Command has opened a formal investigation into a viral video allegedly showing students of Excel College, Ejigbo, consuming alcohol and smoking within the school’s boys’ hostel.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the disturbing footage, which was recorded in April but only resurfaced online recently, has sparked widespread public outrage and condemnation.

According to her, the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to take over the case from the Ejigbo Police Division, which had earlier invited the school’s principal for questioning.

“The principal, who also doubles as the proprietor, explained during interrogation that the students captured in the video had already graduated and left the institution. Despite this, the school management is fully cooperating with the police to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Adebisi stated.

She emphasised that the ongoing investigation seeks to ensure such inappropriate and disruptive behaviour is not repeated within academic institutions.

Adebisi appealed to secondary school authorities across Lagos, both public and private, as well as parents and guardians, to intensify supervision of their wards and instill discipline.

“Parents, teachers, and school leaders must take proactive steps to guide children toward good conduct, moral values, and responsible behaviour. This will help curb vices that could trigger public outrage or undermine peace within schools and society at large,” she added.
