If you’re looking for a definitive list of all the PS5 120fps games, you’ve come to the right place. Both the PS5 Disc and Digital models let you play PlayStation 5 games at higher frame rates than previously possible on a console, and many of the best PS5 games support the feature that was once only reserved for high-end gaming PCs.
But what are the benefits of playing games at 120 frames per second? Well, you get smoother and more responsive gameplay. Playing at a higher frame rate can be a game-changer for those who have never experienced it before, and it’s easy to see why PC gamers swear by getting the highest frame rates possible. Even the latest smartphones have featured high refresh rate screens for smooth scrolling.
Competitive gamers benefit most from 120fps games on PS5 as there’s less input lag. When playing at 120 frames per second, the update time for each frame is 8 milliseconds (ms), compared to 16ms when playing at 60fps and 32ms at 30fps. When the speed of a button press registering can decide between winning or losing, it’s understandable that pro gamers always opt to play at the highest frame rates.
Playing at 120fps also helps with motion clarity and can reduce motion sickness, which makes it an appealing option, even for single-player games. As each frame time is updated faster, there’s less chance of ghosting, smearing, or other visual artifacts that can be off-putting when playing a game at a lower frame rate like 30fps.
Developers can also use 120Hz output and variable refresh rate (VRR) to unlock the frame rate of 60fps games, giving you more frames to play with while squeezing out some extra responsiveness. With the power of the PS5 Pro also available to developers, we’ve started to see more 120fps PS5 games join the list. Several PS5 Pro enhanced games can reach higher frame rates than before, and games should reach the 120fps mark more easily.

👀 Looking for all the Xbox Series X 120fps games?
We’re seeing more titles get 120fps support on PS5, including many of Sony’s first-party games like Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, God of War Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Don’t forget to head into each game’s settings to see whether it has a high frame rate mode, as it may not be on by default. You’ll also need to enable 120Hz in the PS5’s system settings, which we’ll explain how to do below.
Not every game on this list will hit a locked 120fps, but they all support 120Hz, meaning you can get higher frame rates than 60fps or 30fps. The PS5’s recent VRR support has allowed several developers to use the PS5’s 120Hz output to offer unlocked 60fps mode in games like The Last of Us Part 1 and Horizon Forbidden West so that you can enjoy more responsive and smoother gameplay. Remember, you need a HDMI 2.1-compliant display to access the PS5’s VRR mode.
Those with 120Hz displays can also play some games on this list at 40fps, a noticeable bump over 30fps. Even though you’re not getting the silky-smooth response of 120fps, some developers are still making use of that extra headroom to provide a more enjoyable and responsive experience. Check out all the PS5 120fps games below that take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s 120Hz output:

To experience 120fps PS5 games, you’ll need a TV or monitor with an HDMI 2.1 port. The easiest way to see if your display supports high frame rates is to head to the PS5’s settings and then click on ‘Screen and Video’. From the ‘Video Output’ submenu, scroll down to ‘Enable 120Hz Output’. If you can’t turn this feature on, then your display isn’t capable of playing games at 120fps on PS5. You’ll also need to enable VRR for games that support 40fps modes or unlocked frame rates.
🆚 We’ve put the PS5 vs Xbox Series X head-to-head
The two terms are used interchangeably, but there are a few important things to note. Hertz (Hz) refers to the number of times a display refreshes per second, while frames per second (fps) is the number of individual images generated by a console or a PC. A game may support 120fps, but if you don’t have a 120Hz capable display, you won’t be able to experience it. Similarly, if you’re playing a 60fps game on a 120Hz display, you won’t be able to hit 120fps unless the game supports it.
To ensure that a game can hit frame rates as high as 120fps, developers will often lower the resolution of PS5 games. That means some titles will target a resolution of 1440p or 1080p, resulting in a loss of picture clarity. Some graphical features are also reduced, such as shadow quality, foliage density and draw distance.
However, the smoothness that 120fps provides can often make up for the drop in resolution, and in online multiplayer games, a faster frame rate can make all the difference to your kill/death ratio. You’re also less likely to be focused on minor graphical details to care about the decrease in fidelity when playing a fast-paced shooter or racing game.
There’s been a recent trend where PS5-only games like A Plague Tale: Requiem and Gotham Knights failed to offer a 60fps mode at launch, let alone a 120fps option. However, A Plague Tale: Requiem has since received a patch that lets it exceed 60fps at the cost of resolution.
We’ve seen a lot of cross-gen games in the three years the PS5 has been out, and some commentators have suggested that current-gen games will opt for more graphically demanding features in the future like ray tracing instead of aiming for higher frame rates. (Here’s every PS5 game with ray tracing support in 2024.)
I always prefer a smoother frame rate over more graphical fidelity, and thankfully 30fps-only titles are a rarity. Sony’s more powerful PS5 Pro also helps circumvent this problem. Most of Sony’s first-party games also offer an unlocked 60fps or 40Hz mode instead of truly aiming for the heady heights of 120fps, but hopefully, the list of 120fps PS5 games will continue to grow in the future.
