‘Roasting meat on tyres causes cancer’ – Abia Govt cautions abattoir operators

The Abia State Government has expressed dismay over the practice of roasting the hides of goats, sheep, and cattle over open fires using automobile tyres and plastics.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Ministry of Environment, the government warned that this unhealthy practice could introduce toxic metals and dangerous chemicals into the meat, compromising its quality.

According to the ministry, smoke from burning tyres contains volatile organic compounds that reduce air quality, pollute soil, groundwater, and surface water, and pose serious health risks, including cancer.

The state government stressed the urgent need to protect food safety, preserve the environment, and safeguard the lives of Abia residents.

“To this end, butchers, meat sellers, and all users of abattoirs are advised to use firewood only for burning and roasting goats, sheep, cattle, and other livestock,” the statement read.
