Senate investigates NDLEA’s allegations against lawmaker

The Senate has announced the formation of a six-man ad-hoc committee to investigate recent allegations made against Senator Ashiru Oyelola, who represents Kwara South.  The committee will summon the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to clarify the accusations involving the senator. The NDLEA recently claimed to have raided Senator Ashirus residence in Ilorin, Kwara State, where illicit drugs were allegedly discovered. This followed Ashirus comments during a Senate debate on October 15, where he described the NDLEA as "the most corrupt and compromised agency" while discussing a bill to establish the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation. Senator Ashiru raised concerns over the timing of the NDLEAs allegations, calling it an act of "witch-hunting" in retaliation for his Senate contributions. He accused the agency of personal attacks and attempting to stifle the Senates freedom to debate national issues. Senate President, though expressing doubts about the timing of the NDLEAs allegations, refrained from drawing conclusions.
