Senate pushes for national summit on out-of-school children

The Senate on Wednesday called for the convocation of a national stakeholders’ summit to address the issue of out-of-school children in the country.

This followed the adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Education on the compelling need to tackle the challenge of out-of-school children in the country.

The Chairman of the committee, Senator Usman Adamu, who presented the report at the plenary in Abuja, said the committee had considered the submissions of the Federal Government on the challenge of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

He stressed the need for a roadmap on the matter.

He called for synergy among the three tiers of government on the issue.

In his contribution, the senator from Yobe, Ahmed Lawan, lamented that the Federal Ministry of Education had no clear-cut policy on out-of-school children.

Lawan, who put the number of out-of-school children at about 20 million, said the National Council of Education should have a clear policy to tackle the menace.

He asked the Federal Government to make funds available in the 2025 budget for effective handling of the problem.

Also speaking, the senator from Bayelsa, Henry Dickson, called for a national summit on the issue.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, described the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria as a serious matter.

He called for collective responsibility for the ongoing efforts to address the problem.
