The Sokoto State Government, collaborating with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has commenced the development of an extensive climate change policy designed to tackle environmental issues and promote sustainable development.

This initiative was highlighted during a two-day validation session organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Sokoto State Ministry of Environment.

During the session, Mustapha Alkali, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and representative of Commissioner Nura Shehu Tangaza, highlighted the significance of the policy in addressing climate change and fostering societal development.

He observed that environmental sustainability is essential for governance, peace, and holistic development, declaring, “A sound environment guarantees a sound society.” “Without it, advancement is impossible.”

The proposed policy emphasizes approaches to lessen the effects of climate change, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance resilience to environmental alterations. Important actions involve establishing quantifiable goals, promoting responsibility, and improving cooperation among involved parties.

The policy also intends to function as a guide for incorporating climate factors into governance, guaranteeing that environmental safeguarding stays a focus at every level. Conversations throughout the session emphasized the necessity for collaborative efforts and cooperation among stakeholders to execute successful solutions.

When completed, the climate change policy will outline practical measures to ensure the environmental and economic health of Sokoto State.

It will focus on cutting emissions, tackling climate-related issues, and encouraging sustainable practices to protect the state’s future.
