The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Kano State chapter, has warned the Kano State Government against what it described as a political witch-hunt of its members.
The party made its position known on Saturday during a press briefing at its headquarters in Kano.
Speaking to journalists, the NNPP Publicity Secretary in the state, Engr. Ibrahim Karaye said the recent actions of the government against some of its members are undemocratic and unwarranted.
“Politics should be played with decorum and respect for one another,” Karaye said.
The party accused the Kano State Government, which it said was formed through its platform before later abandoning the party, of targeting its members.
According to Karaye, the government left the party due to fear of intimidation from federal powers and alleged financial misconduct by the governor.
The NNPP further alleged that the government has withdrawn Hajj seats earlier allocated to some of its members, including former commissioners, advisers, and party leaders across the state.
“The governor has withdrawn Hajj seats allocated to some of our members who served the state diligently,” he said.
“As citizens of Kano State, they have the right and privilege to be awarded Hajj seats and even more.”
The party also accused the government of harassing and intimidating former government officials for the return of the vehicles allocated to them during their time in office.
Karaye stated that the vehicles form part of their consolidated salaries and were the only benefits they received for serving the government during their tenure.
The NNPP called on the Kano State Government to respect the constitutional right to freedom of association as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“We urge the government to respect the right to association and stop the political witch-hunt of our members,” Karaye added.
