The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria has condemned the recent killings in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, in Plateau State, calling for urgent and decisive action from authorities.
In a press statement, the council expressed outrage and grief over what it described as the brutal killing of innocent citizens.
It said the incident highlights the fragile state of security in the country and the urgent need for government intervention.
The council warned that repeated condemnations without concrete action are no longer acceptable.
According to the statement, “statements without corresponding action have become painfully predictable and insufficient.”
It urged leaders and security agencies to go beyond rhetoric and demonstrate real commitment to ending the violence.
Citing Islamic teachings, the council stressed the sanctity of human life, noting that the killing of innocent people is a grave crime regardless of religion or ethnicity.
It added that such acts violate both moral and religious principles.
The group also suggested that the attack may have been carefully planned to trigger wider religious and communal tensions.
It raised concerns about the possible involvement of “well-funded and highly coordinated interest groups,” including foreign elements linked to arms proliferation and cross-border movements of fighters.
According to the council, such actors often exploit Nigeria’s socio-religious divisions to fuel conflict, weaken unity, and advance geopolitical interests.
It called for urgent identification and decisive action against both external sponsors and local collaborators.
The statement further highlighted the worsening insecurity across northern Nigeria, including insurgency and banditry, and paid tribute to security personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The council extended condolences to the government and people of Plateau State, as well as families of victims, praying for strength for those affected.
It also urged religious leaders to promote peace and restraint among their followers.
It warned that “silence or neutrality in the face of incitement only emboldens perpetrators.”
The council called for a thorough and credible investigation into the attack and urged Nigerians to remain united, law-abiding, and vigilant.
