A footballer identified simply as Kamo has been hacked to d3ath by unidentified assailants suspected to be cultists in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State. It was gathered that the incident occurred on Thursday morning, July 10, while the deceased was observing his routine training session at a popular local football ground known as Centre Field. Kamo, who is a goalkeeper for a grassroots team, B-Unit Football Club, had finished his morning drills when some male adults accosted him on his way home. A resident who did not want his name mentioned while citing security reasons told Punch on Saturday that the attackers immediately descended on Kamo with dangerous weapons and left him with fatal cuts on his head. He was, however, said to have succumbed to the injuries on the spot before help could arrive. "He came to the field regularly and went home with some of his colleagues, but on this particular day, he left alone after the morning drill. He had just walked some metres away from the centre when some boys ambushed him and macheted him on the spot. This caused those around to run for safety, and before help could come, he had already died, the source narrated. Meanwhile, there have been speculations that the incident could be cult-related due to past incidents of cult attacks in the area. Another source, who only identified himself as Kazeem, however, described the late athlete as an easy-going fellow. Some people had speculated that a rival cult gang attacked him, but I am not so sure about that. I understand this is because of the way he was k!lled, which was related to the incidents in the past. He is easy-going and he hardly caused trouble other than his football career and his side hustle, he said. He added that some members of the community had called on the police for more security surveillance in the community to forestall recurrence. The post
