Taraba: Kurmi residents demand recognition amid years of neglect

5 hours ago 2

The people of Kurmi local government council in Taraba State are intensifying calls for government attention, as the council grapples with decades of under-development and perceived marginalization.

Known for its natural beauty and cultural richness, Kurmi has long remained behind in major policy initiatives in the state.

Residents, who spoke with our reporter, said they were not seeking charity, but equitable development and leadership that considers every part of Taraba important.

From bad roads to poorly equipped schools and ailing healthcare facilities, the community said the signs of neglect were hard to ignore.

“We’re not asking for handouts,” a local community leader told reporters.

“We’re asking for what every citizen deserves, investment, opportunity, and leadership that sees every part of Taraba as equally important,” he said.

Located near the Cameroon border and rich in agricultural potential, Kurmi could play a pivotal role in trade, tourism, and regional development.

However, many residents believe that the absence of sustained government presence continues to stifle that potential.

As another election cycle approaches, residents remain skeptical about political promises, citing a history of unfulfilled commitments.

Still, there is a strong resolve to keep advocating for change.

But locals, including motorists, who bared their minds to our reporter, said they will continue to raise their voices in town halls, markets, schools, and places of worship hoping that one day, their pleas will lead to action.
