Parents have been urged to nurture their children not only academically but also in accordance with God’s teachings, to help them become responsible members of society.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, gave this charge on Wednesday during the Third Annual Ramadan Lecture organised by the Muslim community of the ministry. He noted that if young people were raised with God’s guidance, they would not go astray in the digital age.

Arigbabu stated that the topic, “Holistic Education and Digital-Age Parenting: Islamic Guidance from the Holy Qur’an”, was carefully chosen in response to the current situation in the country. He emphasised that technology is here to stay, and people should be taught how to use it to their advantage.

“The Qur’an is not against digitalisation, but the issue is how to balance it with religious knowledge to become better human beings,” he said.

On her part, the permanent secretary in the ministry, Mrs Oluwatosin Oloko, noted that the lecture aimed to educate and encourage Muslim faithful to conduct themselves according to the dictates of Allah, even beyond the month of Ramadan.

The chairman of the lecture, Tajudeen Olori, described the event as a bold step towards becoming worthy role models. He stated that the digital age, when guided by Islamic teachings, should make life easier, broaden perspectives, enhance human systems, and encourage self-reflection among worshippers.

In his lecture, the resource person, Prof. Kamaldeen Balogun, said, “The right type of education is the only means to guide and train a person’s will, enabling them to choose the path of enlightenment rather than the route of darkness.”

Balogun stressed that the topic requires not just an analysis of the problem but also a consideration of solutions, paving the way for a balanced education in line with the teachings of the Qur’an.

Expressing appreciation to the organisers, the chairman of the Muslim community, Akeem Bisiriyu, stated that the event was designed to educate people on the importance of balancing education with religion.
